River, Valley, Roots, and Rocks

The Dan River originates on the slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains just north of Meadows of Dan. From there it tumbles down a gorge flanked by steep pinnacles. Then it splashes and babbles as it winds through Kibler Valley. This pristine place is prized by anglers and kayakers, but otherwise mostly a little known oasis where locals take a Sunday afternoon drive. During the week very few cars come and go. A gravel road meanders alongside the river so it's easy to walk for five or so miles with the water on one side and untouched rugged forests and ancient stone croppings on the other. Small streams cascade down the steep walls. Roots cling to damp hillsides. Trees wrap their arms around each other and wildflowers find homes in every imaginable spot.

Wildflowers and Waterfalls

Over the past 16 years I’ve made hundreds of photographs here. These I created recently on a trip to usher in another birthday. I was in a contemplative mood pondering the passage of time and the importance of knowing and loving a place. You can click on a photograph to make it full screen.
