From the rim down to the river

The Linville Gorge Wilderness in western North Carolina, sometimes referred to as the Grand Canyon of the East, is a national treasure. With the aid of a good trail map, you can wander thru some of the 12,000 acres of protected land. You’ll find ancient Appalachian forests, and a rugged river anchored by undisturbed cliff faces as it winds through gigantic boulders at the bottom of the gorge. From the rim you can gaze out at earth’s grandeur and contemplate your place within it. There are light, moderate, and difficult hikes - all of which have their own unique vantage points and payoffs. Here I share a few images from time spent there in early September. I’m already planning a return trip. I wish it for everyone.

There are several beautiful waterfalls in the Wilderness area, and some of them are easily accessible on well maintained trails. I have done that in the past, but this time ventured out on other paths, and thus don’t have any waterfall photographs. So, you’ll have to visit yourself! This is not a photo I took. I found it here.
